Therapy for Low Self-Esteem in Edinburgh
Never quite enough.
Low self-esteem rarely announces itself. It hides inside the harsh inner critic that narrates your day. The apologising for things that need no apology. The achievements you explain away as luck, and the compliments that bounce off. The sense that everyone else somehow got a manual you never received.
From the outside you may look perfectly capable, even confident. Inside, it can feel like you are forever auditioning for a part you’ll never quite get. Living this way is exhausting, and it quietly shapes everything: the opportunities you don’t go for, the relationships where you settle, the rest you never feel you’ve earned.
How I work with self-esteem:
The beliefs at the heart of low self-esteem were learned, usually early, and usually for understandable reasons. A child who concludes they are not enough is often a child doing their best to make sense of their world. The critic that torments you now most likely began as a protector, trying to keep you safe from criticism, rejection or disappointment.
That matters, because what has been learned can be unlearned. In our work together we get to know your inner critic rather than fighting it: where it came from, what it fears, what it has been trying to do for you. We listen for the quieter voice underneath it. And gradually, in both mind and body, you practise a different way of being with yourself: steadier, kinder, and far more accurate about who you actually are.
You might recognise yourself here:
• A relentless inner critic and harsh self-talk after any mistake
• Perfectionism, and the fear of being found out
• People-pleasing and difficulty saying no
• Explaining away achievements and deflecting praise
• Comparing yourself to others and always coming up short
• Struggling to believe you deserve good things
Becoming your own ally:
Imagine meeting yourself with the same fairness and warmth you’d offer a good friend. That isn’t self-indulgence. It’s the foundation everything else gets built on.
I offer a free initial consultation, a relaxed chat about what you’re experiencing and how we might work together. I see clients in person in Leith and Newington, Edinburgh, and online across the UK and around the world.
